LFLG - Part 5

The Overflow of Love: Who is My Neighbor?

We have officially reached the final frontier of our Lessons for Loving God series. We’ve covered the heart, soul, strength, and mind—but as Pastor Paul shared this weekend, vertical love for God is the fuel that must drive horizontal love for people.

Jesus’ answer to the lawyer’s question ("Who is my neighbor?") was an explosion of cultural boundaries. A neighbor isn't defined by proximity or similarity, but by need + our response. In a world of increasing polarization and busyness, the call to "go and do likewise" is a radical act of spiritual warfare. True faith doesn't just feel compassion; it stops, sees, acts, and follows up.

Follow-Up Exercises & Practical Steps:

  1. The Neighbor Prayer List: Add a "Neighbor Section" to your prayer journal from Week 1. List 3–5 specific people—coworkers, literal neighbors, or even someone you find "difficult"—and pray daily for God to soften your heart toward their needs.

  2. The "See & Stop" Challenge: This week, intentionally leave 10 minutes of "margin" in your daily schedule. Use that time to notice someone in need—a stressed colleague or a lonely senior—and offer a simple act of mercy.

  3. The Stretch Commitment: Move from awareness to action. Whether it’s volunteering with a local ministry partner or inviting a new neighbor over for coffee, choose one costly act of service to practice this week.
